Chimney Repair, Totnes

A customer contacted us regarding damp and dripping water around a disused chimney.

Upon inspection, we quickly identified two separate issues:

  1. Water ingress through the chimney flashings
  2. Dampness down one side of the chimney breast

Further investigation revealed that the lead back gutter on the chimney had been coated with a rubber compound, which had failed. When we removed the chimney cap, we discovered that both flue chambers had been backfilled with rubble and waste.

We stripped back the roofline around the chimney and replaced the leadwork.

To remove the debris, we had to make two access holes in the chimney breast. Once cleared, we installed two vents in the breast to allow for proper airflow, and we fitted a new chimney cap along with two new pots.

Poorly vented chimneys can cause significant issues in all types of properties. Warm air rises from inside the building and cools when it reaches the unventilated space above the roofline, leading to condensation and damp problems.

With over 30 years of experience in chimney construction and surrounding building structures, combined with a fully qualified lead welder on our team, we are confident in our ability to resolve virtually any chimney-related issue.

We also use a drone to inspect around chimneys, allowing us to accurately identify problems before any money is spent on scaffolding.
